About Me

Jean Herman

My art begins with a vision and ends in a story. Viewed through my eyes, events, places, and different cultures take on a new perspective.  I capture ideas, visions, and concepts using fabric, paint, texture, stitching, patterns, and color. Each of my pieces binds these various elements together to create a unique and individual story. To me every life situation, a beautiful landscape, a religious experience, or a special human relationship can be interpreted as a search for meaning.

My goal is to bring each person’s appreciation for this eternal search just a bit closer through art that touches them.My art incorporates different media and techniques, textile art, stitching, drawing, painting, monotypes, and collage.

Whether it is an individual piece or a series, spontaneous or thought out, my goal is the same.; to create an emotional response to my art and to open the viewers’ eyes to possibilities. For me, the ability to travel has enhanced my view of the world. I live everyday with an awareness of color and shapes.

Each day I see something that produces an idea for a future art piece. When an idea keeps returning, I then begin to develop it a flesh out the concept. A design begins to take shape and then I am immersed in the wonderful creative world of an artist.www.jeanherman.com

THE PROCESS

01.

STEP ONE

I work in fabric, choosing silk, cotton, or hand painted fabric I create myself. I start my work by posting on my design wall several photos, a sketch, or a simple paper collage. Then I produce my fabric art, which is essentially a collage technique. I design my pieces with fabric shapes building my image. I create my work on a two layer fabric background sized to the size I plan on creating.  Then I machine stitch heavily creating my unique texture. My final step is adding oil pastel highlights.

02.

STEP TWO

My final stage is mounting my work on stretcher bars. I then choose the background canvas, silk, or painted cotton to which I will attach the art piece. I then  then stretch the finished piece on the frame.  Of course I have to attach a hanging wire on the back and the work is then hung as any stretched canvas.
