I created Ancient Roofs, a mixed media/fiber piece when inspired by the view from the small ship I was on that was cruising slowly down a canal in Germany. All along the canal and the Rhine River there were small towns built into the hillside. I became fascinated by this ancient castle on built on a hill. The sunlight made everything appear in stark contrast, the white walls, the red roofs, and the shadows. It was a study in shapes and line. I sketched it quickly using pen and ink and watercolor. In addition, I took several photographs as the angles changed as we moved slowly. Upon returning home I could not wait to attack the challenges of creating the image on fabric.
