A mixed media/fiber piece showing women dressed in colorful garb working hard in the fields.
In my visit to South Africa Besides seeing the many animals I wanted to have a sense of how people lived in the villages. It was harder to negotiate with our guide, but we managed to drive by many small villages and see women working in the fields. Women do a lot of the farming in Africa and Asia. Men do some of the hard work of plowing but then everyday weeding and nourishing falls to the women
I am relatively sure you can see similar scenes in the most rural parts of our southern states. But maybe the colorful clothing that I so enjoyed in Africa would not be seen.
I originally worked on this piece to tell the story of how Rotary International has helped African farmers discover new drought resistant crops. I decided to come back to the piece, cut it up, use sky behind figures, outline figures and enhance the foreground and figures for a 3D effect, totally changing the piece and it’s composition.
